The Day of Atonement: Yom Kippur
Tishri 10
The 10 days from Rosh Hashana until now are called the Days of Awe. It is a time to get your heart ready for Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the year. It was the one time when the High Priest could enter the Holy of Holies and it’s the day that the Book of Life was sealed for the year with the blood of the lamb sprinkled on the Ark of the Covenant. It was the most solemn day of the year and was sometimes referred to as the “Sabbath of Sabbaths.” This day is spent in prayer and fasting.
26 The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 27 “On exactly the tenth day of this seventh month is the day of atonement; it shall be a holy convocation for you, and you shall humble your souls and present an offering by fire to the Lord. 28 You shall not do any work on this same day, for it is a day of atonement, to make atonement on your behalf before the Lord your God. 29 If there is any [a]person who will not humble himself on this same day, he shall be cut off from his people. 30 As for any person who does any work on this same day, that person I will destroy from among his people. 31 You shall do no work at all. It is to be a perpetual statute throughout your generations in all your dwelling places. 32 It is to be a sabbath of complete rest to you, and you shall humble your souls; on the ninth of the month at evening, from evening until evening you shall keep your sabbath.” Leviticus 23:26-32
On this date in the Bible:
- Possible date of The Fall of Adam and Eve with God performing the first sacrifice of atonement. Answers in Genesis: When did Adam and Eve rebel?
- Moses descends Mt. Sinai for the third time with the second set of tablets.
Things changed in 70 AD with how this holiday is celebrated. Since that time there has been no temple in Jerusalem so there is no Holy of Holies for a High Priest to go into. It is interesting to note that the Temple Institute today has already created the furnishings for the next temple. All they need is a location and a green light from the government to begin building the temple. Some believe they will get that green light from the Antichrist in a peace treaty in the future.
