Rosh Hashana – The Head of the Year
Tishri 1
The Biblical name for this day is Yom Teruah – the day of shouting or blowing. It is also known as the Feast of Trumpets. This is the first day of the seventh month on the religious calendar. It is the first day of the first month on the civil calendar. This is thought to be the time of creation with Tishri 1 being the 6th day of creation.
This feast is introduced in Leviticus 23:23-25NASB:
23 Again the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 24 “Speak to the sons of Israel, saying, ‘In the seventh month on the first of the month you shall have a [a]rest, a reminder by blowing of trumpets, a holy convocation. 25 You shall not do any laborious work, but you shall present an offering by fire to the Lord.’”
This holiday gets its Feast of Trumpets name because of the shofar blasts that are sounded during this time. Many believe this is the time of year when Jesus will come back to call His bride with the sound of the trumpet. 1 Corinthians 15:52
On this date in the Bible:
- Creation of Adam and Eve (Talmud)
- Noah removed the covering on the ark. Genesis 8:13
- Binding (Akedah) of Isaac Genesis 22. This story is read in Jewish synagogues at this time each year.
- Hannah conceives Samuel (Midrash)
There are 4 different shofar blasts:
- Tekiah – 1 long blast
- Shevarim – 3 medium blasts
- Teruah – 9 short staccato blasts
- Tekiah Gadolah – 1 long blast until the breath runs out (the last trump)
