The binding (Akedah) of Isaac
-Isaac is a “type” of Christ. A type is a representation by one thing of another. Adam was a type of Christ (Rom. 5:14) and so was Isaac (Heb. 11:19). Here are some similarities:
-Both were sons of the promise loved by their father.
-Both were willing to be sacrificed even though they had the power to stop it.
-Both carried their own wood.
-Both were to be sacrificed on the same mountain, Mt. Moriah.
-Both were “resurrected” on the 3rd day. Isaac figuratively, Jesus literally.
-Both received a bride after.
Isaac was 37 and not married yet when Sarah died.
The Cave of Machpelah was the first piece of Promised Land property deeded over to Abraham. A deposit of the promise.
Betrothal and Wedding
“Thigh” is a euphemism for the male anatomy. Much like Adam “knowing” his wife means they were naked but not afraid, if you get my meaning. The reason Abraham’s servant placed his hand on Abraham’s “thigh” was because that was the area of the covenant. Remember the circumcision? Just like we place our hands on a Bible today to swear an oath, the “thigh” is how it was done back in the day. Aren’t you glad you live in today?
The story of Abraham’s servant going to find a bride for Isaac follows the pattern of the ancient Jewish wedding. It’s also the same pattern between Jesus and His bride.
One thing I love about Rebekah…sister was a hard worker! 10 camels. Each able to drink 20-40 gallons of water. Do the math on that! Even if she had her nurse and maids with her to help (very likely), it’s still a huge job! And she did it with a servant’s heart.
